I have been surrounded by artistic people my whole life. My mother could take a swatch of fabric and build a beautiful dress from scratch. She loved creating ceramics and painting and all things artsy. Later on my two boys also inherited this trait... drawing and painting and creating and designing. Me? Not so much. I took one hands on art class in college and cried, literally, doing a project. I always avoided the artsy things I knew I wouldn't be good at. Even with the promise of wine.....
Paint parties are the latest craze and I've avoided those as well....Then this wonderful program popped up at our library, set on the calendar by my colleague. It's a Paint Party for kids (sans wine of course) and it had the same exact format as those nifty parties all my girlfriends have been attending. What an awesome surprise! I watched as the kids piled into the room. A full house! Blank canvases in front of them and eager faces in anticipation of instruction. Step by step they painted and built something amazing.... What a great confidence builder for these kids! Oh how I wish I had a program like this! Each and every painting had its own amazing personal touch and the kids wouldn't leave the room when it was over. When we do these types of programs, we give kids a chance to touch a blank canvas and be successful just for being there. It didn't matter whatsoever what their painting looked like. It was the experience that shaped the afternoon. The smiles said it all. Libraries open doors. Libraries build confidence and shape the future of children through experience. Lets not forget that every week is library week. Save our libraries and shape the future!
