There's been much buzz lately about adults reading YA titles and (gasp!) enjoying them. YA books are edgy. They are funny. They are sad, disturbing, heartwarming, and sometimes downright awful. By and large YA books are just like every other area of books in the library. Go figure. To kick off summer reading for everyone, we've got a bunch of hot, new summer titles in this week. I'm excited to reach in and grab something new to try. Why don't you do the same?

One of the best parts of Summer Reading is our Teen Volunteers. We get upwards of 75 during the month of July. They are all looking to fulfill community service hours and truth be told, sometimes keeping them all busy and under control is a job in itself. One of the absolute best uses of teen volunteers during the summer is having them prepare our crafts that we will use in storytime in the fall/winter. Each storytime requires 30+ crafts with all the supplies, etc.. Having teens cut and prepare these ahead of time is FABULOUS. It requires lots of pre-planning, of course. Today I am am creating each of the crafts, templates, and their samples (as you see pictured). Once our summer volunteers come in, I will have hours and hours of cutting, sorting and preparing for them to do when things get slow. It's also a great way to get a jump on fall and get a little creative and crafty. |
