I am most proud of launching a very popular and successful Lego Junior Makerspace at our library. I have run Lego clubs since the summer of 2009, but this was the first that followed a literacy curriculum designed and supported by Lego. The program is for children in grades K-5 and it is super fun. Each week I select a theme that is revealed through an book I read aloud. The themes have included bridges, vehicles, outer space and inventions. I include a display of books on the topic, lots of Lego resources and magazines, teen volunteers (who are great with ideas), handouts and anything LEGO I can get my hands on. Kids are free to create on their own or in a group. The adults who stay (and are welcome to participate) are amazed at the focus, creativity and collaboration. At the end I take pictures of all their creations and post them to our Flickr stream. I usually have about 5 minutes to do this before someone asks, "Where's my space station on Mars that I built? I want to show my dad". :-) Visit my LEGO pinterest board for fun ideas and resources.
